The following are the useful information you should know if you are going through tooth extraction;

Before Tooth Extraction

  • Have your meal: you cannot eat until the numbness cleared. The numbness can last for few hours.
  • Inform us about any medical condition or any medication you are taking especially if you have or had any type of heart condition, high blood pressure,blood disorders, diabetes, allergy or you are on any type of blood thinner like Coumadin or Aspirin.

After Tooth Extraction

  • Bleeding following extraction or surgery is common. Bite firmly on the folded gauzes you received after tooth extraction for about 1 hour. Try to swallow your saliva to keep the gauze dry. Do NOT spit as this may cause bleeding. After one hour wash your hands and remove the gauze gently. If you still had bleeding, place extra gauzes provided by our office and bite for another hour. If bleeding persists, contact our office or the nearest emergency room.
  • Swelling is commonly occurred. To reduce this, apply an ice pack on your cheek close to the area for 1 hour following operation. Apply it 10 minutes on / 10 minutes off.
  • Pain and discomfort at extraction/surgical site are common. Take one Advil or Tylenol (NO Aspirin) once you remove the gauzes to reduce the amount of pain and discomfort post-operatively. Start taking any prescribed medication as directed by us.
  • Do NOT rinse or brush until next morning. The day after, you can start to brush normally except on extraction site which required frequent salty water rinse (1 tea spoon in 1 cup of water) to avoid socket food impaction, infection or dry socket. This is mandatory until full closure of the extraction site occurs. Do not disturb healing process by touching the site with your finger or tongue.
  • Do NOT smoke /drink alcohol and avoid eating hot or spicy foods for the first 48 hours. Do NOT use straw. Cold and softer foods like yogurt, milk and ice cream are recommended. If you want to drink tea or coffee, make sure they are in room temperature.
  • Rest on the day of extraction. Avoid any type of exercises. Generally you can go back to work the next day.
  • In cases that sutures are required, you may need to come back to office for sutures to be removed and area to be checked.

Dry socket is a condition associated with severe pain mostly after extraction of lower back teeth. Lack of formation of blood clot (due to reduced amount of bleeding) or if formed blood clot lost (due to smoking, lack of rinsing, or extraction site manipulation), can postpone healing process which causes severe pain and bad smell. This may need further treatment and cleaning the area in our office.
